How does a heat pump work?

To warm an indoor space, an air source heat pump pulls heat from the outdoor air (even in cold months) and transfers it to the indoor unit, or air handler.

To cool a space, it pulls heat out of the indoor air, just like an air conditioner.

A simple description of the process is that a fan blows air across the coils where the refrigerant absorbs heat (evaporation). The refrigerant then releases heat at the other set of coils (condensation). This process can work in either direction.

A compressor pressurizes and moves the refrigerant through the system. A reversing valve can change the direction of flow of the refrigerant.
