Q: Are there rebates available for heat pump installation?

Rebates vary depending on your circumstances, your home and the installation. Check out www.betterhomesbc.ca to learn more about rebate options. Eligibility for rebates is determined by the program provider.

Question 1

What is a heat pump anyway?

Accepted Answer

A heat pump is a single system that provides heating and cooling for buildings. It uses electricity and a refrigerant to transfer heat between indoor and outdoor units.

Question 2

How does a heat pump work?

Accepted Answer

To warm an indoor space, an air source heat pump pulls heat from the outdoor air (even in cold months) and transfers it to the indoor unit, or air handler

To cool a space, it pulls heat out of the indoor air, just like an air conditioner

A fan blows air across the coils where the refrigerant absorbs heat (evaporation). The refrigerant then releases heat at the other set of coils (condensation). This process can work in either direction

A compressor pressurizes and moves the refrigerant through the system and a reversing valve allows for the refrigerant flow to change direction

Question 3

What are the benefits of a heat pump?

Accepted Answer

A heat pump provides 2-for-1 heating and cooling with a single system

Highly efficient due to moving heat rather than creating it

More climate friendly than a fossil fuel system

Suitable for commercial and residential use

Equipment has a long lifespan and low maintenance cost (annual professional maintenance recommended)

Question 4

What are some additional considerations?

Accepted Answer

Heat pumps generally perform best in moderate climates (like Victoria), although cold climate heat pumps also exist

If you were using fossil fuels to create heat, then switching to a heat pump will increase your electricity usage as you have changed the type of energy you rely on

Size matters - to operate efficiently, your system needs to be right-sized for your space; an HVAC expert can recommend the right equipment for you

Question 5

What factors will you consider when recommending a system for my home?

Accepted Answer

Before we provide a quote or recommend equipment for your home, PolarPro will consider factors such as

The heat load calculation for your home (determines the heating and cooling capacity an indoor space requires in order to maintain comfortable temperatures considering the layout, square footage, building envelope, environmental factors, etc.)
The electrical capacity at your home
Installation locations within your home and access
Ductwork - existing or not, layout, desire for new ductwork or not

Question 6

Are there rebates available for heat pump installation?

Accepted Answer

Rebates vary depending on your circumstances, your home and the installation. Check out www.betterhomesbc.ca to learn more about rebate options. Eligibility for rebates is determined by the program provider.

Question 7

Is PolarPro a rebate program registered contractor?

Accepted Answer

Yes, PolarPro is registered with the Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN).

Question 8

What is a heat load calculation?

Accepted Answer

A heat load calculation is an assessment that determines the heating and cooling capacity (measured in BTUs) an indoor space requires in order to maintain comfortable temperatures. The assessment takes into consideration factors such as the home's layout, square footage, the building envelope, environmental factors, etc. Specific heat load calculations are typically required in order to qualify for government rebates.
